The Evolution of Halloween Costume Ideas for Couples and Families

October 30, 2018

We aren’t a family that does half-assed. We’re more of a whole-ass crew. Our kids have tried a couple of times to be basic about something and Husband and I look at them with squinty whatchu talking about Willis eyes and ask, “Do you even know this family?” In Halloween terms, figuring out costumes stresses me out so I put it off for a while until the the procrastination stresses me out more and then we somehow pull something out. Husband and I had an evolution of pretty crafty couple costumes which then became crafty family costumes after the kids were born so if you need ’em, we’ve got some Halloween costume ideas for couples and families.

And, side note, it is not about having the most elaborate or put together costume. It’s about going for it — putting it out there and looking silly and being 100% invested. Some Most years we’ve pulled together a costume last minute. So for those of you still wondering what to dress up as, I figured I’d share the wealth.

(This year’s costume could possibly take the trophy as my favorite (!!!) so keep an eye out on Instagram and Facebook for what is coming!)

To date, Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy is a FAVORITE! The chances that I had the perfect dress for this??? High. Very high. Piggy was my idol as a kid. And both characters are pretty much our exact personalities. We should have known from our first costumer ever that we were meant to be together forever.

Popeye and Olive Oyl.  Husband is def the more Olive Oyl statured of the two of us so we changed up roles. (Fun fact: our dog, Olive, got her name because of our Halloween costume this year!)

Sadly, our Halloween pics from Year 3 and 4 are missing and I sure do wish I had them. Year 3 Husband and I were Inspector Gadget and Penny and Year 4 we got help from a friend and were The 3 Little Pigs. Those pictures went down with MySpace so you’ll just have to take my word for it that the costumes were epic!

Our fifth year we were Tired AF Parents but for real. We had just had a the She-Babe 2 weeks before so NOPE — we went small this year. By the way, the photo is true to form. I was an exhausted mess and Husband was still happy and charming.

This next costume only works in the Dominican Republic which is why I love it so much but you could make something like it work for you too. Two of the big supermarkets in DR are Super Polo and La Cadena so we made a play off of that and became superheroes. Super Polo and Captain La Cadena to the rescue.

And last year’s couple costume was an ode to our new host country of Mexico. Though I’ll be honest our crowd was a tad young because no one knew who we were. Ummm… The Most Interesting Man in the World (The Dos Equis guy) and a Dos Equis beer. Reeeeeeeeaaaaally????

These are a bit more sentimental because I know I have limited years before the kids opt to be their own thing. (Good Lord, let it not be a slutty anything or the typical scary horror mask. I beg of you. No basic bitches in our household, please.)

This was Daughter’s second Halloween. It isn’t the best Alvin & the Chipmunks but I was also about 4 months pregnant so, you know, exhaustion. On this day, we also found we were having a baby boy so the picture is extra special! And again, the personality fits the chipmunk.

Following the baby news, this year our family was complete with the He-Babe. We had costumes for half the family (obviously the kids) so Husband and I pulled together some things we already had at home and bought a few finishing details. Presenting the Mickey + Minnie Family.

I heart-eye emoji loved our Beauty and the Beast year. Daughter wore that dress on the daily anyway so that was simple and painting the He-Babe’s face to be Beast always makes me laugh. And there is really nothing a projector and cardboard can’t do.  Ahhhh when they’re young and little and let you do whatever you want.

Our Peter Pan year was inspired by the Tinkerbell costume which wasn’t, in fact, a Tinkerbell costume. We found it at a craft store in DR, bought some wings, and then found the Peter costume. Captain Hook was easy to throw together. Wendy was the hardest but a friend lent me a blue dress and I threw a blue tutu around it. Since my hair skills are crap, I actually went to the salon to get my Wendy hair going on. Gotta love the inexpensive-ness of DR salons.

The summer before this Halloween we visited Great Adventure with my sister and nephews. We had the grand idea to each get our own superhero capes and walk around with it all day. We decided to use them again for our Superhero family costume. Husband had his Superman shirt and for the kids we bought Batman shirts and masks (then painted She-Babe’s pink). I got my hands on an actual Wonder Woman costume so that was a win.

Which brings us to last year. We’d found the kids’ Star Wars costumes at the Disney Store for a steal. Then all we had to do was work what we had into the mix. I had the boots and the dress. Husband borrowed a vest.

Want to know what we’ll be this year? I had to use my mom skills to convince the kids to do it but I can promise it’ll be one of our best so check back tomorrow on Instagram or Facebook
